London City Airport chauffeur service

The smallest of the London airports and the nearest to the desks many of its passengers are flying back to, which changes what a chauffeur there is for.

01 — THE AIRPORT

City is one terminal beside a single runway laid along the quay between two of the Royal Docks, a few miles east of Canary Wharf. The flights are short-haul, the aircraft are small enough to make the steep approach the airport requires, and the distance from the aircraft door to the arrivals hall is short. Passengers with nothing in the hold are often through very quickly indeed. That compresses everything the timing of a car depends on. At a large airport there is slack between landing and the barrier to cover a car that is running a little behind; at City there is almost none, so the chauffeur has to be in the hall before the aircraft is on the ground, not when the board says the bags are in.

Flight tracking earns its keep here in a different way. On a flight of an hour or two, a delay is nearly always decided at the other end, before the aircraft has left its gate, and it is known to us as soon as it is known at all. The pick-up is moved with it, and the gap you chose between the scheduled landing and the car is kept, which at City is usually a short one, and should be. The approach over Canary Wharf is steep and the runway short, so in poor weather a flight can be held or sent to another airport; a diversion shows up in the tracking, and the car follows it rather than waiting at an empty barrier.

The roads out are short and slow in proportion. Canary Wharf is a short drive west, and outside the congestion charge zone; the City is reached along the A13 and the Limehouse Link; Mayfair is a crosstown run through the City itself. The fare is fixed on the route either way, with the congestion charge inside it when the journey incurs one. City also keeps short hours. It closes overnight, and there are no flights from Saturday lunchtime until Sunday lunchtime, a restriction the government declined to lift when it approved the airport's expansion in 2024.

02 — WHERE WE MEET YOU

Meeting you at London City

One terminal and one arrivals hall remove the which-terminal question altogether. What is left is timing, and because the walk from the aircraft is so short, the chauffeur needs to be inside and at the barrier before the flight lands.

Arrivals hall
The chauffeur waits at the barrier as passengers come through from the aircraft, holding a board with your name. The hall is small, so there is no question of looking for each other across a crowd.
Short Stay car park
The car is parked in the Short Stay car park close to the terminal, because collection on the forecourt has not been allowed since January 2026. The chauffeur takes the bags and you walk across together; it is a matter of a couple of minutes.
Departures
Going the other way, the car sets you down on the terminal forecourt, which is built for a stop of a few minutes and no more. The charge the airport makes for that stop is already in the fare.

Each figure is the lowest the booking form quotes for that journey on an ordinary day, with the airport’s own parking charge already in it. A night, a bank holiday or the congestion charge adds what it adds, and is shown before you confirm; VAT at 20% is added on top. Price your own journey and the figure you are shown is the figure you pay.

04 — WORTH KNOWING

Collected from Short Stay, not the forecourt

Since January 2026 the forecourt has been for set-down only, charged and limited to a few minutes, and anyone collecting a passenger must use the Short Stay car park. It is a couple of minutes' walk from the terminal doors, so in practice the change costs you almost nothing: the chauffeur meets you inside and walks you over.

The DLR is next door

The Docklands Light Railway stops at an elevated station beside the terminal, and for one person with a small bag going to Bank it is hard to beat. Book the car for what the train does not do well: cases, colleagues, a stop on the way, a private call, or anywhere in the West End.

No Saturday afternoon flights

City does not fly from Saturday lunchtime until Sunday lunchtime. A Saturday evening arrival described as London City is worth checking twice before it is booked; the flight is almost certainly into one of the other airports.

What every booking includes

How it works

I

Price the route

Put the two addresses into the booking form. The fare comes back on the measured distance, not off a table, and it is the fare you pay.

II

Confirm the car

Choose the vehicle and the booking type, give us the flight number if there is one, and pay or put it on the account.

III

Meet your chauffeur

His name, photograph and registration reach you the evening before. His live position reaches you on the morning.

IV

The name board in arrivals

On an airport pick-up he is inside the terminal at the barrier, not in a car park. Delays are absorbed by us, not billed to you.

05 — QUESTIONS

If you are on your own, carrying hand luggage and going to Bank or Canary Wharf, quite possibly. The car is the better answer with luggage, with more than one person, with a destination west of the City, or when you want to take a call in private on the way. We would rather you booked it for one of those reasons.

Sooner than at any other London airport. With hand luggage only, close to the scheduled landing time is reasonable; with a checked bag, leave a little longer. Whatever gap you choose is the one kept if the flight runs early or late, so it is worth choosing it deliberately.

There are none to meet. The airport closes from Saturday lunchtime until Sunday lunchtime. If a Saturday evening booking names City, it is almost always a slip for another airport, so check the ticket before you confirm.

Where the route and the time of day incur it, yes, and it is shown in the quote rather than added later. Canary Wharf sits outside the zone; the City and Mayfair are inside it, so the same arrival can carry it for one destination and not another.
